An annual competition where a specific number of Syrian elite clubs compete in home and away matches. The first place in men’s category wins the championship, while the last two places land in 2nd Div. and get replaced by the first two places there. The SFA started developing the competition’s system in a grand move, allowing the participation of foreign players and transforming the competition into a professional league or a premier league. Until now, Al-jeish team is the most crowned with 17 championships, followed by Al-karama team who won 8 times and Al-ittihad who won 6 times. The premier league is the official and leading championship in Syria. It’s an exciting and astonishing experience that appeared for the first time in the season of 66/67 in which Aleppo’s Al-ahli (Al-ittihad now) was crowned with its first title. The following three versions of the league continued regularly, but stopped in the fifth and sixth version (70-71, 71-72), then went back in its seventh version 72-73 and stopped again for four years in a row, until it was back again in 80-81 to continue without stopping.
